VALUE

What is the concept of value? With what criterion do we evaluate things?

According to what, are some things valuable to us while  others are not?

For instance why has gold, throughout history, always been accepted as valuable?

You are going to say that since it is easy to process and because of its shiny yellow color has made it valuable in our eyes. . .

The real reason gold is valuable is because it is hard to find. . if, gold were more commonly  found  . would gold be any different from iron?

Today, many products’ value is not their real value. . .

That is to say, every product has an actual  value or cost-value. . and it also has a demand/supply value. . and, unfortunately, presently many products are being sold at their demand/supply value (which can provide scarcity rent) which  is  not  their actual value. . .

As a dramatic example;

A 140 sq.meter home in a reputable location in Istanbul goes for an average New Turkish Lira 250-300 thousand  . . . Whereas, the same home goes for New Turkish Lira 150 or 200 thousand in a location distant from the city center. Now, why do these two homes sharing the same  characteristics sell at such different prices? What is the real cost of this home?  Actually, in consideration of the cement, bricks, iron and other materials, the real cost of such a home is less than New Turkish Lira 150 or 200 thousand. . . Yet, peoples’ location preferences and the increase in demand for these locations (together with scarcity of supply) elevate the value of this home much above its real value. . .

This sample is applicable to many products in the market today. . .a commodity’s demand/supply  value is most often  higher than its real value. Advertising and packaging are most important in increasing the demand/supply value of a commodity.

Additionally, there are opportunists who are after selling a product much higher than its actual cost/value. . .they come into the picture when people are really in great need of a product and  they take advantage of their helplessness and sell these products at exorbitant prices and reap a rainfall. . . when it snows  they sell a snow chains for 4 or 5 times higher than its cost. . . when there is an earthquake they sell a bottle of water for New Turkish Lira 10.  They furnish medication for cancer patients at astronomical prices. . . Why? Because people need that product. . . they are obliged to buy it. .  And these brazen opportunists very well  take advantage of this. . .

From which we understand that the concept of value is determined according to the demands and needs of people. . .and is vulnerable to opportunists. . .

Today, hardly any  product  in the market is sold  at its actual or cost-value. . .it is us people who determine this value with our demand and our needs. . .

As people, we do not attribute the real value to anything . . .

We do not value nature, we burn it to build houses. . .

We do not value animals, we kill them to wear  fur coats. . .

As people we do not value our fellow men. . .

Despite the mantra of many human resources in many corporations being: “priority to humans”. . . In conformity with the corporations’ or more correctly the shareholders’ interests and  under the pretext  of corporate  contraction or just to please certain persons. . . people are let off. . .

We never think of how many people we have hurt and how many people the redundant person had been  supporting. .  . Because to cater to certain people and to professionally advance is more important to us than those people and their lives which have gone to the dogs. . .

And as people, we do not value God who created us, who provided us with all of the world’s blessings, who preserves us and who provides for us. . . not even meriting Him a thank you. .

“Should one wish to understand one’s value in  the presence of God, he should look at the value he attributes to God in his heart.”  Prophet Muhammed (God commend  and salute him)

We say, “Let’s live our lives in this world. . .and we can think about the rest in the next world”

Whereas, eternal life is not a location of remedies, it is one of giving account.

If you are helpless in this world. . . in the next world you become a remedy. . .

And remember God took a Covenant from the People of the Book: To make it known and clear to mankind, and not to hide it; But they threw it away behind their backs, and purchased with it some miserable gain! And vile was the bargain they made! Verse 187, The Family of Imran (Al-i Imran) Sura 121
